End of COVID Public Health Emergency and National Emergency

The federal government decided the COVID-19 pandemic Public Health Emergency declaration will end at the end of the day on May 11, 2023. President Biden signed a law ending the National Emergency on April 10, 2023.

This decision affects vaccinations, treatments, and COVID-19 self-testing availability.

What does this mean for me?

Starting on May 12, 2023, you will still have access to vaccination and medication related to COVID-19.
  • COVID-19 vaccinations provided by in-network providers must be covered by non-grandfathered plans, without any cost share from you.
  • Treatment for COVID-19 (including Paxlovid® and Lagevrio®) is not affected by the end of the declared emergencies, and coverage is subject to the terms of your plan.

What about COVID-19 tests?

Starting on 5/12/2023, at-home COVID-19 tests no longer have to be covered by your health benefit plan. You will still be able to buy tests at stores without a prescription.

There are ways to continue to access free COVID-19 at-home tests, including:
  • You can request free tests from the federal government via covidtests.gov. Every household in the U.S. can order 4 free at-home tests and have them shipped to their home.
  • Many communities offer free testing. A list of community-based testing sites can be found here.
